Taxes and duties

On behalf of Switzerland, we collect taxes and other duties on goods in cross-border traffic, such as customs duties and value added tax. Together, these account for around one third of all Swiss government revenue each year.

The following duties generate the main revenue:

• Customs duties
• Value added tax
• Alcohol duties and prepaid disposal fees
• Tobacco duty
• Mileage-related and lump-sum heavy vehicle charges
• Automobile duty
• Mineral oil tax
• Incentive fees on volatile organic compounds (VOC)
• CO2 incentive fees
