Gold, silver and coins

Statistics on Switzerland’s foreign trade in gold, silver and coins provide a detailed overview of trade flows by country. Available since 2012 in the SwissImpex dashboard, these data were expanded as of 2021 to better distinguish the origin and type of imported gold, thereby enhancing market transparency.

Data starting from 2012

The SwissImpex dashboard provides monthly results by country from 2012 onwards. Data relating to gold in raw form (e.g. bars) are recorded under customs tariff heading 7108.1200. This category includes both mined gold and refined gold, with no distinction between the two possible for the period from 2012 to 2020.

With the aim of improving transparency regarding the origin of gold, the FOCBS introduced new import subdivisions as of 1 January 2021. These allow a distinction to be made between:

  • mining gold (key: 911)
  • refined gold containing at least 99.5% gold (keys: 912 / 913),
  • refined gold containing less than 99.5% gold (key: 914).

For further details on the customs tariff heading and statistical codes, please consult the Swiss Customs Tariff (Tares).

Monthly imports by subdivision, broken down by country, are available on the I14Y interoperability platform.
