Laser pointers

Laser pointers can cause serious damage to health if used improperly. They are therefore subject to strict legal regulations in Switzerland. The customs authorities support the enforcement of the ban on their import and transit.

Three switched-on laser pointers are lying side by side on a dark surface. The laser beams are clearly visible in red, green, and blue. Each pointer emits a distinct light beam in its respective color.
A laser pointer is a hand-held device that uses laser radiation to produce visible points or lines of light. Its laser radiation is used for indicating things and for entertainment purposes. Laser pointers with high radiation power can damage the eyes and skin severely and permanently, and cause severe glare.

Involvement of customs authorities

Customs offices are involved in enforcing the ban on laser pointers. The import and transit of laser pointers, as well as their possession and distribution, are prohibited. The only exceptions to the ban are Class 1 laser pointers, which are intended for indoor use only. These devices must be clearly and legibly marked with the corresponding laser class.

Warning sign for a Class 1 laser in accordance with international standards. The sign indicates that the laser radiation is harmless.
