Environment
This page provides essential information on the protection of species (CITES), the regulation of hunting and fisheries, the handling of hazardous chemicals and pesticides, as well as measures for waste management and air pollution control.
Protection of species (CITES)
The illegal trade in exotic plant and animal species is a lucrative business, but it has dramatic consequences. Many wild plant and animal species are endangered or threatened with extinction.
Hunting (wildlife) and fisheries
The import, export, and transit of protected animals and wildlife products are subject to the Species Protection Ordinance. A permit allows the import of certain live fish and crabs for consumption. The laws aim to protect endangered species and promote biodiversity.
Hazardous chemicals and pesticides
Switzerland participates in the international PIC procedure to regulate the trade of hazardous chemicals and pesticides. A special emphasis is placed on the Ordinance on Chemical Risk Reduction and import decisions according to the conventions.
Waste
Waste legislation ensures that waste is given only to suitable disposal companies. For cross-border transport, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) are responsible for enforcement.
Air pollution control and ozone-depleting substances
In the case of cross-border movement, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) are responsible for enforcing the following provisions:
